Steelers Training Camp Roster Breakdown

Locks: Ben Roethlisberger, Bruce Gradkowski

On the bubble : Landry Jones

On the outside: Tajh Boyd, Tyler Murphy, Devin Gardner

Scouting report: The only true drama is who — if anyone — ends up being the No. 3 quarterback on the 53-man roster. I see Tajh Boyd being that No. 3

Running back

Locks: Le’Veon Bell, DeAngelo Williams, Dri Archer

On the bubble: Josh Harris

On the outside: Ross Scheuerman, Cameron Stingily, Roosevelt Nix

Scouting report: An extra spot can be counted here to open the season while Bell serves a suspension. Josh Harris will definitely be that spot filler, sticking with someone who knows the system.

Wide receiver

Locks: Antonio Brown, Markus Wheaton, Martavis Bryant, Sammie Coates

On the bubble: Darrius Heyward-Bey

On the outside: C.J. Goodwin, Shakim Phillips, Eli Rogers, Tyler Murphy, Devin Gardner

Scouting report:  Heyward-Bey is valuable enough on special teams to earn a spot on special teams. Also look for him to have minimal playing time while Coates gets adjusted.

Tight end

Locks: Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, Will Johnson (FB/TE)

On the bubble: Jesse James

On the outside: Cameron Clear, Rob Blanchflower, Michael Egnew

Scouting report: James is the favorite to emerge as an eventual successor to the longtime veterans at the top. I could not agree more.

Offensive tackle

Locks: Kelvin Beachum, Marcus Gilbert, Mike Adams

On the bubble: Non Applicable

On the outside: Alejandro Villanueva, Kevin Whimpey, Mitchell Van Dyk

Scouting report: Tough for any of the younger players to break into the top three for a team that figures to carry only three. Something I honestly do not see happening.

Locks: Maurkice Pouncey, David DeCastro, Ramon Foster

On the bubble: Cody Wallace, Chris Hubbard

On the outside: B.J. Finney, Miles Dieffenbach, Reese Dismukes, Collin Rahrig

Scouting report: The starters are set, but which undrafted Rookies will fit the build? Only training camp will tell.

Defensive tackles

Locks: Steve McLendon, Daniel McCullers

On the bubble: Cam Thomas

On the outside: Mike Thornton

Scouting report: The Steelers could save $2 million by cutting Thomas, but that would leave them quite thin at the position.

Defensive ends

Locks: Cameron Heyward,(New 6 yr. Contract) Stephon Tuitt

On the bubble: Clifton Geathers, L.T. Walton, Ethan Hemer

On the outside: Matt Conrath, Joe Kruger, Niko Davis

Scouting report: The team hopes it’s set for years at the top of the depth chart. There are question marks, however, after that.

Outside linebackers

Locks: Jarvis Jones, Arthur Moats, James Harrison, Bud Dupree

On the bubble: Shawn Lemon, Anthony Chickillo, Howard Jones

On the outside: Shayon Green

Scouting report: Outside the high-pedigree top four is a group of intriguing players hoping to make an impression. Chickillo will make that impression.

Inside linebackers

Locks: Lawrence Timmons, Ryan Shazier, Sean Spence, Vince Williams

On the bubble: Terrance Garvin

On the outside: Jordan Zumwalt

Scouting report: Again, the Steelers are set at the top four. Garvin is a special-teams standout. Zumwalt is an interesting unknown.

Locks: William Gay, Cortez Allen, Antwon Blake, Senquez Golson

On the bubble: Doran Grant

On the outside: B.W. Webb, Kevin Fogg

Scouting report: It will be difficult for Fogg or Webb to steal a roster spot from a rookie drafted in the top four rounds.

Locks: Mike Mitchell, Shamarko Thomas, Will Allen, Robert Golden

On the bubble: Gerod Holliman, Ross Ventrone

On the outside: Jordan Dangerfield, Alden Darby, Ian Wild, Isaiah Lewis

Scouting report: Tough decisions to be made here: Golden and Ventrone are valuable special teamers, Holliman a late-round pick with potential.

Locks: K Shaun Suisham, LS Greg Warren

On the bubble: P Brad Wing

On the outside: P Jordan Berry

Scouting report: The Steelers didn’t bother bringing in a body to push veterans Suisham and Warren. Aussies Wing and Berry will battle it out.
