ANTONIO BROWN: Male Sports Personality of the Year

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown is Variety’s male sports personality of the year, the magazine announced on its website Monday.

The award is given as part of Variety’s sports entertainment breakfast, which is held Tuesday in Los Angeles, at Vibiana.

Brown led the NFL in receiving yards and receptions last season. He was tied for second in the league in receiving touchdowns with 13. His 1,698 receiving yards were the most by a Steeler in a single season, breaking his own record from the previous year.

As Variety notes, Brown is the first NFL player to tally 1,000 receiving yards and 1,000 return yards in the same season. The magazine also points out that he made his acting debut in “Ballers,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Laila Ali joins Brown in getting recognized by the magazine. The career undefeated boxer was named Variety’s first female sports personality of the year with the magazine citing her success as “a TV host, CEO, mom, wife advocate for children and author.”

The sports entertainment breakfast will include a panel with the Miami Heat’s Chris Bosh, former New England Patriot Willie McGinest and Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes.
