My Ode to #75..”Mean” Joe Greene
“Hey kid, catch”!
The one simple line delivered in the Coke commercial back in 1979 that made me wish I was that little white boy. By someone that showed me what it was like to be a proud black man.
“MEAN” Joe Greene! #75! The man who was my idol since 1969, the year I was born into a Steelers family. From grandmother, to mother, brother & sister, uncles, aunts and cousins..the “Black-n-Gold” was worn throughout my entire family.
So believe me, that being a lifelong Steelers fan it does me proud to witness the #75 jersey being retired this Sunday. A day the Pittsburgh Steelers will also be honoring every veteran from every war, something that I am also familiar with.
Charles Edward Greene, known as “Mean Joe” Greene, (born September 24, 1946) played his entire NFL career for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1969-1981). He is considered by many to be one of the greatest defensive linemen ever and was the cornerstone of the legendary “Steel Curtain” defense.
181 games with 172 starts. Need I say more. Click on the link below to see entire statistic history of “The Man”!
So this is my ode to you, “Mean” Joe Greene. You are more than well deserving of this hallowed honor, of jersey retirement. Sincerely, your ##PS4Lifer..Brian Christopher Jenkins. #PS4L
Now, enjoy that famous commercial.
